Best Korean Drama Series
81Introduction
Korean Television is experiencing a world renaissance. Known as the Korean wave, Korean culture, its comics, its music, its food, but especially its television shows, is being transmitted around the world like never before.
However, their shows operate a little different than the ones in North America, (being smaller and more akin to European ones). They don’t have seasons, rather they have a set number of episodes with a definite beginning and an end. They tend to be inherently stylish and to laddle on the pathos like its going out of style. Korean Dramas are a little like the visual equivalent of MSG
Korean dramas fall roughly into three categories:
The Love story
The period piece
The detective show
The love story is by far the most popular genre in the Korean wave. Love dramas drive much of the movement’s popularity. They tend to be lost love and Cinderella stories. They ladle on the injustice and the misunderstandings and, combined with a unique stylishness unique to Korea, have found a way into the hearts of many female viewers.
The period piece is a television show that illuminates a little piece about Korea’s historic past. When I first got into Korean Dramas, I knew very little about Korean history before WWII. And I think that’s true for most people. But after watching a few, I’ve come to realize how rich and varied their history is. For sheer, entertainability, the best period drama is "Dae Jang Geum." "Jumong," comes a close second. "The Sea God," a distant third. ("Damo" is good, too).
Korea, like America’s fixation with "law and order" and "CSI" type shows, enjoys its fair share of crime shows. Though, often times, the show will be about the criminal, rather than police (or at times, both). "Resurrection" is my personal favourite. "Coma" is short and gritty. The recent, "Lawyers of Korea" can’t stand up to its elders, but its a welcome new addition.
And of course, some shows do their own thing. "All-in" is unclassifiable. Others, like Damo, are a mixture of genres (a period piece and a detective show).
Now, since a lot of the popularity of Korean dramas is amongst the female population for the romancey soap operas, a lot of the other amazing television shows get overlooked, I think. So my top ten list may not contain strictly ten most popular, but simply the best, from a variety of genres.

Top ten dramas
1) Dae Jang Geum – a bit older but it, along with Winter Sonata, started the damn Korean cultural wave in the first place. It's amazing shows like this that jumpstarted the industry and rocketed it to fame. A must see. It’s simply enthralling. It’s the story of a woman in Feudal Korea, her quest for revenge for the death of her family, her triumphs as a cook and a healer and the people that want to stop her. You won’t be able to put it down.
2) Full House – a major smash hit. A woman is tricked out of her house by her friends when she goes on holiday. Upon returning, she finds a famous actor has bought her house. She makes a deal to be his housekeeper in exchange for eventually being able to work back to owning her house. Romance/angst ensues.
3) Coffee Prince – a strange little romance about a woman who works so hard to support her mother and sister that she has no time to keep up her feminine appearance. Mistaken as a boy and due to a bizarre series of occurrences, she is hired by a rich, handsome man to play his gay lover to get his mother to stop trying to marry him off. Romance/angst ensues.
4) Jumong – A period piece chronicling the life and death of Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo, one of the ancient three kingdoms of Korea. It’s a massive, eighty episode program that’s truly epic in scope. It makes some of the ‘epics’ that came out of Hollywood look like cheap sitcoms.
5) Winter Sonata – If this were five years ago, Winter Sonata would have a much higher place on this list. It has aged, but not terribly. It is the definitive Korean romance. I wont spoil the plot for you, but it has so many twists and turns you’ll be riveted to your seat. It pretty much set the standard for later dramas to come.
6) All in – an underdog, you wont find this on many top ten Korean drama lists, but this little gem deserves everything I’m about to gush about it. It’s essentially a love story, but it’s a bout a man and his inescapable pull towards the world of gambling. It’s epic in scope, goes from Korea to America and back again. It has mobsters, casinos, prison sentences. It gives the godfather a run for its money. Must see.
7) Goong – Another very popular romance about an alternative world where the Korean royalty still rules and its young prince is in need of a bride (another Cinderella story). I give it a lower ranking than its popularity deserved just because the acting in terms of the male leads (who are very pretty…) is a little jarring at times. Still a very good show.
8) Resurrection – Like all-in, resurrection is a break from the more relationshipy Korean Drama fair. It’s one of the aforementioned detective shows. It's a story about two twins, one dies and the other, takes his place to unearth the secrets that tore their families apart. I've never seen such a well-planned revenge story. It's very good.
9) My Name is Kim Sam Soon – a slight breath of fresh air from the usual drama romance fair. Kim Sam Soon is not your everyday stunningly beautiful Korean actress. She has no plastic surgery, very little make-up and her personality is a little rough around the edges. But despite it all, she is no less deserving of the man of her dreams. Very good.
10) Golden Bride – A romance, but with an interesting take, a half Korean half-vietnamese woman who marries a Korean and goes to his country. Cultural differences ensue. In this case, the couple is already together, its how they deal with their circumstances that drives the show.

Well, it's been over two years since I first made that top ten list. It's had a lot more success than I thought it would. In that time, new dramas have come, old ones have gone. I want to make an updated list. It's not exhaustive, but more inclusive of some dramas overlooked and new greats that have earned a place in this NEW TOP TWENTY LIST
TOP 20
1) Dae Jang Geum – for descripton, see above
2) Secret Garden – a new addition but it's quickly earned it's place near the top. It starts out like a typical Cinderella type story: a poor stunt girl meets jerky rich guy. He falls for her. But then everything is turned on its head about five episodes in. I wont spoil it. But this drama really shines. Great writing. Great acting. A fresh take on some overdone tropes. I highly recommend it.
3) Full house - see above.
4) Coffee Prince – see above
5) Jumong – see above
6) You're Beautiful - simple premise: girl is asked to join a boy-band after her twin-brother's botched plastic surgery leaves him unable to (yes this is a Korean drama so a boy getting plastic surgery is not surprising so much as that it was botched). It's cute girl hanging out with cute boys and wearing pants.
7) Iris - One of the most expensive (and exciting) K-dramas to date. It's got it all, mystery, action, love-triangles, international travel opportunities. It's Korean drama at it's finest. Go watch it.
8) Winter Sonata – see above
9) Dream High - regardless of what you might say about Suzy's (from Miss A) acting. This is an instant classic. It's American Idol meets...Winter Sonata? The first few episodes even feature Winter Sonata's Bae Yong Jun in a cameo role. It stars various idol group superstars like Miss A, T-Ara, 2pm and IU. It's a drama. It's a musical. It's a love story. Watch your favourite K-idols pretend to be teenagers and get their big break (and fall in love).
10) All in – see above
11) Brilliant legacy/Shining Inheritance - A complicated story. Two families, one torn apart and just trying to survive and find each other meet another and through the strength of their convictions and hard work, start rebuilding their lives. Great acting. Can't put it down. It's a real "page turner."
12) Goong – see above
13) My Girl - EXTREMELY POPULAR. Overlooked by me before because I have a bad case of K-drama-Cinderella-story-fatigue. But it's cute fun (and very popular). If you can't get enough of beautiful Korean people reluctantly falling in love, this one is also for you.
14) Iljimae - a period piece on par with Jumong. Only ranked lower because it came later. It's a revenge story about a Robin Hood-like thief who steals from the rich and gives to the poor and gets caught up in a quest to exact vengence for his family, somewhat like Dae-Jang-Geum.
15) City Hunter - interesting drama for it's different-ness. It's about an international espionage incident gone wrong. The lone survivor out seeking answers and along the way, adopting the child of his fallen comrade, raising him in South-East Asia to seek answers about his dead father.
16) Resurrection – see above
17) My Name is Kim Sam Soon – see above
18) My Girlfriend is a Gumiho(nine-tailed fox) - a cute romance about a mythical demon (nine-tailed fox) is released from her prison after 400 years, she assumes the image of a woman proceeds to fall in love with her unwitting (and spoiled rich guy) rescuer, desiring to bond with him so she can become more human. misunderstandings, tensions ensue. Much chicken is consumed.
19) Boys over Flowers – classic Japanese manga story that's now, I believe, a manga, an anime, and a K,T, and J drama. It's about a poor girl, in a rich private school and how she proves herself to be awesome. Can't go wrong.
20) Other....

Hi Freezepopmorality as you know Jumong Is my particular favorite . I think because I am In love with Han Hye Jin . But Coffee prince was quite amusing too . And there was one called "Hello my Lady " I do not know the actress In It but she was quite funny .
I'm partial to Han Ji Min, myself (played a role in Dae Jang Geum and Resurrection) so I know what you mean. The actress in Hello, My lady, also called, I think, "Hello! miss," is Lee Da Hae. She's also the star of "My Girl" which would have been given eleventh place if I'd let it. It's a good little romance.

I've already watched many korean, taiwanese drama i love them all. Recently i've watched "Miss no Good" i really love Willber Pan he's so hot and has a very cute smile, the drama series will be aired on Phil. TV soon. watch them its really so entertaining..make me laugh all day its really a good and great story.

Honestly, If it were up to me, Coffee Prince would have definitely topped the list. The actors in it are incredible, the overal story and feel of it is unique; Yoon Eun Hye and Gong Yoo both seem to have an incredible chemistry in this series, and I have to add that everything feels authentic (...even the kissing scenes... for once..). Not too heavy yet not too light, Coffee Prince is a must for those who want believe in sincere love overcoming strong obstacles such as gender and social status. It sounds corny, but really, it isn`t.

Funniest light korean drama I've seen so far: Full house (great natural acting), You're beautiful (funny acting but a bit unnatural), Coffee prince. For Goong and BBF, I prefer reading the mangas. Creating destiny and Shining inheritance are sweet.

I finished watching QSD last week but I totally haven't gotten over with it. I love its story and all the actors/actresses performed well. I wasn't able to watch the other sageuks (i.e. jumong, dae jang geum) mentioned here. Therefore, they're on my must-see lists this year.

Bit more of a old-school Kdrama person as I enjoyed Kdramas before the Korean wave hit and the overproduction of romance soap operas. Favourite Kdrama for me would be Wang-Cho - made in the late 1990s.

well, i think other than the dramas you mentioned there are: coffee house (2010)an unpredictible drama with humour and exceptional plot, by the same director of full house but for me is much better wrongly underrated... another drama is beethoven virus (2008) wich is a must see with an exceptional main character

It was about on par with "My Girl" till the last two discs, when it went flat, lacking the ups and downs keeping you on the edge of your seat like "My Girl." Best Korean series of this type was "Full House."

Watch Iljimae. It's story is kinda confusing at first but it will captivate you with it's thrilling aura. And when you get to the end of the drama it'll leave you wanting more. Sadly there's no sequel YET. Lee Jun Ki (the male lead) is currently in the military. He had to have 2 drama's canceled and he will be in the military for 2 years. He joined last year I believe so he'll be back sometime around next year. I recommend this drama. And look Lee Jun Ki up of Iljimae up if you are interested. :)

Dae Jang Geum is a masterpiece. Even the dozen Korean dramas I have watched are much better than anything Hollywood has put out, Dae Jang Geum is a grade higher though.
I have seen many on that list yet but I have have really enjoyed: Witch Yee Hoo, My Girl, Winter Sonata, Stairway to Heaven, Coffee Prince, Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, IRIS, Wonderful Life, Sad Love Story, Full House.

But you shouldn't try to skip the "Lure of Wife" / "Temptation of Wife" it's the best longest,funny ,dime drama ever. there's a full of twist on this story.

hmm so many to choose from. my first drama that got me fr csi, bones n sex n city fan to kdrama faithful was Coffee Prince. that show got me chuckling, tearing, sympathising and rejoicing all in that 16 episodes.
this year, 2010, has been good to us kdrama fans with the many wonderful productions...

1. Dong yi.
I hv to say, i'm not exactly a fan of period dramas and i started watching this simply because the girl is so pleasant looking. but the first few episodes reeled me in n i was hooked. who wldnt like the story of a smart lil girl overcoming all odds to become the king's fav. every episode i find entertaining and leaves a cliffhanger that just made me wanting more. what i really like is that they even stayed close to the historical facts without boring u to tears. my kudos to the writers and awesome actors/actresses :D
i watched spring waltz bec. of dong yi n i fell in love with seo do young. he has the sweetest smile. yum yum.
2-10... some are ongoing..
2. gloria.. i love the friendships between the four lead actors/actresses. very refreshing albeit exaggerated storyline. wonder y murderers r tolerated in kdrama... almost like baker king, kim tak goo. weird.
3. mary stayed out all night.. i watched this bec it's the same lead guy as the beethoven virus and he looked so different then. i liked him in u're beautiful but i think he is best here :D the lead actress, i was curious to see how she would change from the strong, determined but troubled girl in cinderella's sister to a sweet, innocent girl in this drama. she did such a good job, i'm convinced it's another person altogether. she had me laughing out loud with her dancing on stage. wonderful geum couple.
4. oh, a good girl disguised as boy story this year is sungkyunkwan scandal.. i had a few good laughs there n i was rooting for the second lead guy to get the girl. he was that cute. sorry to micky's fans. hmm a tidbit: micky n the lead girl are actually a couple now.
5. secret garden is pretty good. i love strong athletic girl. would actually have preferred that they have kept to the first few episodes storyline n the body transfered to one/two episodes just for laughs. but apparently not. i hope it doesnt go downhill from there.

Because usually k movies stories is similiar like that. Like my little bride, 100 days with mr arrogant, hello schoolgirl, my tutor friend, love so divine, and there are many. N i recmnded bread, love and dream for watched. Because you can feel the spirit, kindness, n learn a lot from kim tak goo.

I love almost all korean dramas, they are very light and the cast are almost always lovable. I love Mischievous Kiss. the way the girl chased the boy and ended up he learn to like her too. The Assorted Gem is also an example of real family life with all the crisis they had been too and how they all succeeded in life and love.
I love korean drama, really entertaining, touching, and romantic. Korean drama is also having not too long episodes so the story does not long-winded, so different with Indonesian tv series. My favourite korean drama are:
1. Baker King, highly recommended. It teach us to keep pushing on to reach our dreams.
2. Full House : having a very funny story. Besides, the acctress and actor (SHG and Rain) are super cute.

I can say i had watched almost all of the korean series
among the titles that they might forget, are tree of heaven, bittersweet life by lee dong wook, will its snow this christmass baker king is full of life lessons. those that alredy mixed story or those that taken in differnt places like korean japanese, korean and vietnam culture like the golden bride - the movie long island is nice too. its korean shoots in the philippines, fugitive plan B is nice also. but for me my top list will be kim sam soon, the leads actor hyun bin is a cast in secret garden and he,s cuter now. full house is all time favorite.

Being a recent Korean convert I started with BOF (good) and then You're Beautiful (AMAZING.) Let me tell you, I have never cried over a TV series ending but I did with this one and although bits of it are imperfect, at the end of day, what made this the most perfect drama for me. I discovered k-dramas fairly recently and have been without reliable internet for about seven months, so there are still a ton that I need to watch, but I still have favorites.
Shining Inheritance/Brilliant Legacy (great acting and pacing, totally sucked me in)
My Name Is/My Lovely Sam-Soon (the slow-building, bickering romance was totally satisfying and the humor kept the drama from being overwhelming)
Goong/Princess Hours/Palace (the male leads were a bit dull and the plot dragged a bit near the end, but Yoon Eun-hee was amazing and the alternate-royalty-Korea was really interesting, and besides, the royal "consumation" scene was hilarious)
Boys Before Flowers (part ridiculous mess, part ridiculously awesome, it's worth slugging through the non-sensical, choppily edited, badly scored bits to get to the real gems (usually involving Jun Pyo))
Pasta (a bit slow and drama-less, but the leads are incredible together and on their own; besides, it has a special place in my heart as the first k-drama I ever watched)
I haven't been able to watch it all the way through yet, but I loved what I've seen of My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and can't wait to finish it.
My fav will be Iris. Forever. Srsly :)

wow, I definitely have more unconventional favorites. In no particular order: Prosecutor Princess; Witch Yoo Hee/Amusement; Personal Taste/Preference; Smile, You; Oh! My Lady; Sungkwankyung (sp?) Scandal (although the ending was rushed/sudden, in my opinion); Coffee Prince (although it got too dramatic/heart-wrenching for me towards the end, but I loved the beginning and middle episodes); Powerful Opponents (although I wanted more and the ending felt too sudden)....those are all I can think of that I've completely finished. I do like My Bratty/Mischievous Princess, but some of the plotlines dragged a couple episodes too long for me. I also like Call of the Country.
Autumn in my heart is the best Korean drama(Endless love 1).

I've watched well over a hundred Korean TV dramas. My personal DVD collection. I think it needs to be categorized as romance/ romantic comedies, action-suspense, historical dramas, and melodramas.
Although I liked Full House immensely, there were many others I liked almost as well. My Girl came close.
The best romantic comedy I have ever seen was Couple or Trouble. The script was superior over Full House, and the acting of Han Ye Seul was impressive. I've never seen another actress so COMMANDING of a role completely dominating a scene.
Honorable mention goes to Get Karl and Witch Yoohee.
The tear-jerker sagas like Winter Sonata and its counterparts don't impress me as much as the well-written light-hearted "happy-ending" scripts. But Korean scriptwriters often seem to relish morbid endings.
Jewel in the Palace was fine, but not nearly the best historical korean drama I've seen, not in my opinion at least. Royal Story, Jumong, Slave Hunters, Yi San, Immortal Lee Soon Shin, Dae Jo Young, and Hur Jun were all just as good. Also liked Hong Gil Dong, Iljimae [1992], Iljimae [2008], Return of Iljimae, Damo, Mighty Chilwu, and many others. But the top spot I think goes to the mammoth 200 episode historical saga Emperor Wang Guhn. Emperor of the Sea could have been a lot better if the script hadn't deviated so greatly from the actual historical figure Jang Bogo's life. But standout acting by Song il Guk and Chae Shi-ra made it well worth watching.
Too many fine action-suspense to pick one above at least a half dozen or more. Swallowed Sun, Slingshot, Tazza, Robbers, A Love to Kill, Iris, etc., etc.
For melodramas, mostly on the weight of one man's consummate acting skills in Beethoven Virus, Kim Myung Min. That guy could hold his own with the acting greats of Hollywood. I fact, he reminds me a lot of Alec Guinness, who was dubbed "Sir Alec" by the Queen of England in recognization of his skill as an actor.
so far,all the korean dramas i've watched never dissappoints me....but so far, the best is secret garden...:)))

but besides coffee prince i actually didn't like the rest esp. full house . it's so dumb the story T acting . every thing about it is lame . and so predictable like most kdramas after watching some they all are about tow people who weren't meant to fall in love but eventually after something stupid to be happen they bump into each other and just leave happily ever after and some hilarious things happen that just for that i keep on watching . and i don't know why mostly the girl 's financially in trouble , with normal face and every good guy falls for her and the lovely beautiful one which i see no difference in their faces is left with no one and just grudge trying to win over the guy she primly refused.
i guess it's better for korean movie makers to think of sth different . i like the hilarious mishaps and misunderstandings in the series . but the similar story line kinda freaks me out and bore me to death .

Hello Freezepopmorality, I agree that Korean culture is on the rise. Especially on their way of making TV series. They have good writers that captures the heart of the viewers. I started watching Kdrama's 10 years back when winter sonata was introduced in the philippines. Then I was in loved by The millionaire's first love. I have seen several Korean dramas and became addicted. I just finished My Girl and I really like it especially the story in the end. Thumbs up to the writer!
I now finished watching Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang and I also liked it so much. The writer of this drama is the same as the writer of My Girl. A combination of drama, comedy, romance and action will make you cry, laugh and fall in love. Highly recommendable!

Here's my favorites so far:
Boys over Flowers- this is one of the first I ever saw and really got me into kdramas. Love all the characters and story lines even if there were a few too many episodes.
Secret Garden- Love the strong woman in this one. Also the ending really got me more than any other drama.
The Greatest Love- really funny. I like Cha seung won and his character was both silly and sexy at the same time.
City Hall-Another Cha Seung won movie. He has an incredible kissing scene in the car that wins all time best scene in my mind. Story is different and really good.
City Hunter- Love Lee Min Ho! Love the story and action but wish the last scene was more romantic.
Tamra Island- The one seems so stupid in the first 1-2 episodes manly b/c the English guy is just over the top silly. The real story is between Im joo hwan and the leading girl(can't remember her name). After seeing this one I realized that I just love those silly period costumes with the big black hat. This movie also made me realize what an awesome actor Joo Hwan is. I will always follow his career now. The new drama:What's up is pretty good right now(waiting for more episodes to come out) and then I guess I'll have to wait for him to get out of the military to see anymore.
Man from Nowhere- this is a movie with Woo bin and it's very dark but really good. The music by Mad soul child is pretty awesome. I cried so much in this movie. His relationship with the little girl is so sweet.
Coffee prince- The ending was a bit flat for me but love the comedy in this one. This is one of the funniest kdramas I've ever seen.
Personal Taste- same kind of story line as coffee prince but instead of a girl pretending to be a guy, Lee Minho pretends in this one to be gay. This one is really funny too. Plus, Lee Minho really knows how to do kissing scenes. Some Korean actors don't do strong kissing scenes but not Minho this scene where he says "game over" and grabs her is great. Minho is another really awesome actor and I'll watch any drama he's in because of it.
A.N.Jell- another gender bender. This one is good too.

The Princess' Man is my personal best sageuk drama I've seen, but yet it may be biased seen I have not seen any sageuk dramas in your list. But please do check it out!
For the best comedy drama I would certainly vote for The Greatest Love. It hits all the right notes for people who loves irony, slapstick jokes and it beautifully used metaphoric language! Looking forward to your update! :)

For me, the best drama I've ever seen is Can You Hear My Heart. It is the cutest, most intense drama I've ever seen. I still can't get over it!

Almost all of the best have been metioned! City Hunter and Shining Inheritance are one of my favorites. But I have a few to add that I think need more recognition.
The Moon That Embraces The Sun (recently took my first place from City Hunter. Absolutely amazing! I don't think I have ever cried more tears of joy and sadness for a drama in my entire life!)
