Internet Memes: Milhouse is not a meme is a meme

By

Milhouse is not a meme

Milhouse is a popular character from the animated television series, "the Simpsons." He is a stereotypically timid, suggestible nerd who is the butt of many of the show's crueller jokes. He is picked on by bullies, tricked into mad schemes by his friends and his dysfunctional family is the subject of more than one episode.

Not too long ago, Milhouse became the subject of an internet experiment: a forced meme. A few bored, internet users started a campaign to make Milhouse a meme. They flooded the tubes with his image and shouted to the rooftops gospel of his meme-age.

At the same time, an equal number of naysayers proclaimed that it was impossible to make something a meme. They further say that simply proclaiming something was a meme insured that it would never become one. Meme’s just happened, they weren’t subject to human intervention.

It turns out the “Milhouse is a meme” faction and the naysayers were both half right. After weeks and weeks of Milhouse meme attempts, the internet was decided on two things.

1) Milhouse is not a meme

2) Saying “Milhouse is not a meme,” is a meme.

The fact of denying Milhouse’s meme status, became a meme. In that way, Milhouse became a sort of meta-meme, a meme of a meme. (Although, since Milhouse is not a meme, “Milhouse is not a meme,” couldn’t be logically said to be a meme of a meme.

Some people take it further by saying “milhouse is not a meme is a meme” is also a meme. And then saying “milhouse is not a meme is a meme is a meme” is also a meme, but doing can create headaches and it isn’t encouraged.
