Some of you may have come across the sexy nerd and emo/scene girls and wondered, that’s great, but what about the boys? And needless to say, boys are not alone in the fetishizing of the opposite gender. Girls are just as guilty.
But as in all things, men and women are very different. Where men focus on specifics: glasses, hairstyles, body parts, women look for a more overall package.
The primary sexual fascination of the internet girl is with cute, pretty, androgynous boys. And to be honest, who could blame them? It’s no secret that men got the short end of the stick when God was doling out the sexy gene. So it’s no surprise that women should fantasize about a best of both worlds situation, a female man. The pretty feminine boy is also sought after because he is a rare treasure. He’s unusual and unique.
In japan, there is an entire subculture built around them. These feminine boys are called, ‘bishonen.’ Bishonen can be actors, rockers and anime characters and through the recent dissemination of Japanese pop culture into the rest of the world, this particular fascination has been picked up by fan girls worldwide.
A bishonen is generally tall, graceful and has long, flowing hair, pale skin, large eyes, a small nose, and, more often than not, is often mistaken to be a woman.
Yaoi
A further subculture of the bishonen scene is “Yaoi.” Yaoi is an entire world you didn’t know existed that revolves around fetishizing not just pretty boys, but pretty boys in love with other pretty boys, (in other words, homosexuality). Comics and television shows are written with this audience in mind. And women submersed within the yaoi world create artistic fanfictions of their favourite characters in fantasy homosexual situations. A common example would be to see a girl write a story about Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy putting aside their differences and falling in love.
The androgynous rocker boy.
Gackt is the most feminine male singer in the entire world. He’s a Japanese pop rocker with a whole legion of fans who love him purely for his androgynous good looks, his singing be damned. His music is a blend of the more bubblegum-y jpop sounds from singers such as Ayumi and Japanese alt-rock, which of course mirrors his blended male/female appearance.
Bill Kaulitz, lead singer of the alt rock band, Tokio Hotel, is Europe’s answer to Gackt. So pretty, he could easily pass for a girl, Bill and Tokio Hotel have recently risen to fame thanks to youtube and the internet. From an unknown German band with trite rock sounds to a world touring super act with thousand of screaming (female) fans. Tokio Hotel recently won an MTV video award for best new act. In the opinion of this newspaper man, it wasn’t because of the really good music.

The pretty feminine boy in anime/manga
The bishonen is so ubiquitous, it could probably warrant its own article. They generally appear in works written with women in mind (in a genre called Shojo). The comic writing group, CLAMP, is perhaps best known for their legion of bishonen characters. Kamui, from their comic, “X/1999” is often considered the prettiest boy in the anime/manga culture.
Other prominent examples are Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, Zelos Wilder from Tales of Symphonia and pretty much the entire cast of Weiss Kruz, Fruits Basket and Ouran Host Club.
The television star
Matsumoto Jun, colloquially known as Matsujun is arguably Japan’s biggest television star. He’s stared in the hit Asian Drama series: "Bambino," "Kimi wa Peto" and most notably alongside Nakama Yukie in the smash hit, "Gokusen."
Matsujun got his start in the boy band, Arashi, alongside other feminine boys, Aiba Masaki, Ninomiya Kazunari, Ohno Satoshi, Sakurai Sho. But using his good androgynous looks, signature smile and surprisingly decent acting ability, he managed to transition himself from boy band wonder into television superstar.
Androgyny is common amongst Asian television stars, showing up in other big names like Tomohisa Yamashita (yamapi) and Oguri Shun, but its Matsujun that has consistantly managed to do it the best.
Feminine boys on the internet
Chris crocker is a feminine looking man who rocketed to fame in 2007 when a video of him tearfully requesting for people to leave Brittney spears alone spread across the internet like wildfire. The video showed him in a fit of near histeria over the harsh critiques that Brittney's comback was garnishing. He has since settled into internet celebritydom, his youtube videos and vlog get millions of hits.
And last but not least, this article pays tribute to the random internet boy with a camera. They can be feminine too.

Ooh, nice. This is actually really well-written and informative. I had no idea pretty boys were such a big thing in Japan, which is kind of shocking given the number of anime fans I know and the fact that I not only know what yaoi is but frequently read and occasionally write slash fanfiction!

These boys are fine and have really very symmetrical faces, even after puberty. I know because this its not a fashion, its some sort of genetic mutation. Come here in belarus or latvia, lithuania or estonia, and most boys from new generations have girly faces even after puberty. Even lactation is common. Richard Dawkins must make research for this european "trend" (as i said its not a fashion).

it's not just in japan, I love feminine guys, Daniel Johns the singer from silverchair is the most beautiful creature I've ever seen especially from '97 to '99, now he has butched up a bit :( also the actor Michael Pitt is gorgeous. I had a rough point in my life at that point, and Bill's music saved me from making an irreversible mistake. So... thank you, for introducing the music and beauty of Bill Kaulitz to me. I like guys a lot better that way, I guess I've always felt this way, even since a younger age (I am now Twenty) I always liked boys in dresses *_* I guess it's just a thing you either like or you don't. I don't think a guy who is feminine in the "pretty" sense (as opposed to vain and other things) could ever be too girly for me. Gackt was best in Malice Mizer with his longer darker hair, especially when he wore his sexy pvc outfits and high boots ;) As for Hizaki from Versailles, most people who I've introduced to the band to think he's a girl straight away, he's definitely one of the hardest to guess is a guy, but he's VERY attractive, moreso as a girl than a guy I think - the point though is he is a guy and I'm attracted to him knowing this rather than thinking "Oh, that's a hot girl" so it's definitely a play on gender roles that's attractive to me, rather than actual girls! It also kind of helps a lot that they are Japanese, they pull it off the best and the Japanese to me are by far the sexiest race ^_^ ...Anyway, I just thought I'd drop my views in to maybe give a different perspective..this article really delighted me ;)

Bishounen = "Bi" means "beautiful" "Shounen" mean "boy" (if you change the word "shounen(boy)" to "shoujou(girl)" you get BISHOUJOU meaning pretty girls. they only reason why bishounens are more popular is because they're more rare. we see beautiful and hot girls. hot manly man, but we rarely see pretty or even cute boys (THEY'RE EVERY WHERE IN KOREA :D)

I can't even begin to tell you how much i love fem boys, me and my best friend love them very much, and i am not a lesbian, i don't know how to describe it. It always amazed me how many of these young guys in Japan would leave the house and put on the shoes nearest the door as they went through the genkan, even if they were women's high heels, or fluffy mules, whatever.
